Gov. Newsom Announces Temporary Delay on Evictions

This latest action builds on Governor Newsom’s previous executive order authorizing local governments to halt evictions for renters impacted by the pandemic.

Under the order, renters cannot be removed from their apartments during the next two months if they can’t pay rent. It covers those who have lost work because of the coronavirus, and who need to take care of children who are out of closed schools or family members with COVID-19. Renters still will have to make up all the rent they owe eventually.

Newsom’s order still allows for local governments to pass their own eviction bans, something that’s already happened here in Los Angeles as Mayor Garcetti issued an Executive Order March 15th barring evictions from tenants who "are able to show an inability to pay rent related to the COVID-19 pandemic." Tenants will have up to six months following the expiration of the local emergency period to repay any back due rent.
